Artist Bio
Bernardine Mitchell
(Bio as of March 2004)
Bernardine Mitchell most recently appeared at the Goodman in Crowns during the 2003/2004 Season. She has performed nationally and internationally with a variety of ensembles, in a wide range of roles, including Bessie Smith in Bessie’s Blues with the San Diego Repertory; Alice in Big River; Blues Speak Woman in Spunk; the Matron in Chicago and Antigone in The Gospel at Colonus. She has been featured with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, on NBC’s The Today Show, in the CBS television movies The Guyana Tragedy and A Resting Place starring Morgan Freeman, as well as with the Harlem Gospel Singers on their 1997/1998 European tour. Ms. Mitchell received the 1993 Los Angeles Dramalogue Award for Best Actress, the 1990 Jennie Award for Best Supporting Actress, the 1989 Bronze Jubilee Award for Music and the 2002 Helen Hayes Award for Outstanding Leading Actress in a Musical. She majored in voice and musical theater at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music and is proud to be a native of the great city of Atlanta.
