Artist Bio
David Pleasant
(Bio as of March 2004)
David Pleasant most recently appeared at the Goodman in Crowns during the 2003/2004 Season. A native of Savannah, Georgia, he is a multi-faceted percussion virtuoso, rhythm effects vocalist, composer and lecturer. He created RiddimAthon!®, a performance and teaching method developed from a synthesis of African, Caribbean and African American musical traditions featuring Gullah (Georgia and South Carolina’s Sea Island) culture. He has brought his multi-faceted talents to performances and collaborations with a wide range of major artists, including Wynton Marsalis, Makanda Ken McIntyre, Charles Gayle, Oliver Lake, Erykah Badu, Harry Belafonte and Paul Simon. He was percussionist composer of the Tony-nominated Marie Christine, the original Crowns and Golden Boy. Mr. Pleasant composes regularly for dance and has worked with many artists including Urban Bush Women, Jane Comfort, Marlise Yearby, Graciela Danielle, Forces of Nature and Ron Brown. He has also composed and/or performed numerous arrangements for TV, including Nightline, Primetime, the Disney Channel, PBS and MTV’s Unplugged. David Pleasant plays Roberta Berman Sound Sculptures and 2D percussion.
