Artist Bio
Hope Clarke
(Bio as of June 2006)
Hope Clarke most recently collaborated with the Goodman on The Dreams of Sarah Breedlove during the 2005/2006 Season. Ms. Clarke also choreographed Caroline, or Change at the National Theatre in London. Her choreography for the 1992 Broadway production of Jelly’s Last Jam earned her a Tony nomination, Dramalogue Award, a Joseph Calloway Award and an NAACP Image Award. Other choreography credits include Spunk, The Colored Museum, The Caucasian Chalk Circle, The Tempest on Broadway, Armistad at the Lyric Opera and The Odyssey at Theatre St. Clemens. She has worked extensively with Opera Ebony as its director and choreograper, including its production of Porgy and Bess, which she also directed for Houston Grand Opera. Her Broadway performance credits include the original cast of West Side Story, Grind, Don’t Bother Me I Can’t Cope, Purlie and Hallelujah Baby. Her off-Broadway performance credits include The Reckoning, House of Flowers, On Last Look, Othello, A Raisin in the Sun, Dark of the Moon and The Beautiful LaSalles (AUDELCO nomination). She has been a soloist with the Katherine Dunham Company, Talley Beatty, Louis Johnson, George Faison and a principal dancer with the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. Ms. Clarke’s television credits include Hill Street Blues, Three’s Company, The Jeffersons, Hart to Hart, Amen, Another World, As the World Turns, Beat Street, Into the Night and Sex and the City. Her film credits include A Piece of the Action with Bill Cosby and Sidney Poitier and A Book of Numbers with Phillip Michael Thomas and Raymond St. Jaques. Ms. Clarke’s directing credits include Cosi Fan Tutti, The Medium, The Telephone, La Sera Padrone, The Gathering, Hallelujah Baby, Time Slips and The Vagina Monologues.
