Artist Bio
Maija Garcia

Maija Garcia is a Cuban American director and choreographer based in Harlem, New York City. In 2015, Ms. Garcia choreographed CUBA LIBRE at Artists Repertory Theater; directed Salsa, Mambo Cha Cha Cha in Havana, Cuba; directed FELA! The Concert and served as director of movement for Spike Lee’s latest film Chi-raq. Ms. Garcia worked alongside Bill T. Jones as associate choreographer to develop the Tony Award-winning musical FELA! off-Broadway, on Broadway and at the National Theatre of London. Other credits include I Am New York: Juan Rodriguez at El Museo del Barrio; The Legend of Yauna, featuring Zap Mama, at BAM Fisher; Fats Waller Dance Party with Jason Moran and Meshell Ndegeocello at Harlem Stage, the Kennedy Center and Chicago Jazz Festival and Neighbors by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins at The Public Theater. Ms. Garcia’s signature storytelling integrates live music, historical narrative and interactive design with visceral movement. She also founded Organic Magnetics. OrganicMagnetics.com
