New stages residency 2024

July 12 –  July 22
ALICE ROTUNDA

This summer, four new works written by members of the 2023/2024 New Stages Residency are showcased in live readings.

Each season, the Goodman New Stages Residency commissions brand new works of theatre from local artists and presents in-process readings of early drafts to Goodman audiences. See the classics of tomorrow today!

The New Stages Residents meets twice a month to read and discuss the writers’ works-in-process. Each writer possesses a unique voice, and each approaches writing differently; it is precisely this diversity that leads to fruitful discussions. Residency pieces are strongly considered for further development and production in future seasons. In recent years, audiences have seen Residency works in the Owen Theatre such as Andrew Hinderaker’s The Magic Play, Seth Bockley’s Ask Aunt Susan, Kristiana Rae Colón’s florissant & canfield, Martín Zimmerman’s The Solid Sand Below, Ricardo Gamboa’s The Wizards, Nancy García Loza’s Rust, and Omer Abbas Salem’s Modern Women.

Learn more about the playwrights, directors and casts for each production.

GEORGE WASHINGTON’S MEXICAN BIRTHDAY

By Dolores Díaz
Directed by Henry Godinez

Friday, July 12 at 7:00pm
Alice Rotunda

“American Indian or Alaskan Native. Asian. Black or African American. Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander. White.” These are the five options given to nearly 350 million U.S. citizens when they fill out documents for the census, college applications, or even entry into the prison system. In her newest work, playwright Dolores Díaz explores the intersection of identity for Latine-Americans for whom checking the “right” box could mean all the difference. Viewed through the lens of the month-long George Washington Birthday Celebration in Laredo, TX, this play promises conversations about community, radicalization, and the past, present, and future of identity politics.

Magic is Jordan’s world—but it’s a lonely one, especially as one of the few women in the field of professional magic. Brynne Frauenhoffer’s new play asks what is worth sacrificing in pursuit of your dreams… and what dreams are worth sacrificing in pursuit of your life. From Gospel Illusionists to wannabe Criss Angels, kid’s birthday parties to corporate sponsorships, high-school magic camp to the contemporary Chicago close-up magic scene, Disillusioned is a heart-warming story of ambition, pursuit of passion, and—dare we say it? —the magic of friendship.

Alice Rotunda

Xaru Shine is the new CEO of all-powerful tech company pingping, glittering with ambition, cruelty, and, perhaps, the solution to the climate disaster. All she has to do is orchestrate a deal with Talaminsk Turning Industries, located on a small, sinking island filled with the most valuable metal on the planet. The problem? The island is also filled to the brim with insufferable men. Leftover Men, a new musical by Rammel Chan and Matthew C. Yee is a dystopian satire inspired by mythology, late-stage capitalism and turn of the century alt-rock.
