The Amen Corner

“It’s an awful thing to think about, the way love never dies!” With that shattering realization, Sister Margaret Alexander, the central figure in James Baldwin’s The Amen Corner, reaches the crossroads of her life. For years, the charismatic Margaret has led the congregation of her storefront church in Harlem, and has raised her son, a gifted musician, in the path of righteousness. But when her husband, a down-on-his-luck jazz musician, comes home unexpectedly, Margaret is faced with the prospect of losing both her pulpit and her son, and must confront the choice she made long ago—to give up the love of a man and replace it with the love of God.
